MedTech and Art
This week’s blog is a very interesting topic to me. The
interaction and intersection between medical science and art is a rare topic.
However, the interaction is prevalent in our life and knowledge about the
world.
For example, Mummies, the product of ancient Egyptians to
preserve the dead and portray their best wishes to the dead, is a fascinating
illustration of the artistic sense in medical science. The way the culture is
developed shows it is natural for human to integrate art into medical science.
While the purpose of mummification is to preserve the dead, the various type of
decoration symbolizes different wishes to the dead or different status of the
dead. The artistic elements in the move made mummy a fascinating study that
appears in movies and displays etc.
In modern time, the combination of art and medical science is
shown in plastic surgery. To pursue
beauty, people seek the help of medical science. In turn, medical science has
developed in a way to enhance the art in human. Plastic surgery, in a way, is
both scientific intervention and artistic performance. Though criticized by many
as distorting the natural beauty, it is inevitable that the advancement in
medical science would eventually be used to enhance beauty. There’s no doubt
that people all want beauty. Therefore, in my view, there is no force that can
prevent plastic surgery from thriving.
In conclusion, the interaction between medical science and
art is natural and continuously developing. The two themes are definitely not
independent, but are mixing in more and more interesting ways.

I always loved the movie Mummy, but I have never relate art to the process of mummification. Indeed, there are various senses of art embedded in the process, all dedicated towards respecting the dead. In fact, I think art is a symbol of respect, human respect the nature, so we paint the nature to record its magnificence. Similarly on the issue of plastic surgery, we respect the choices people so we enhances the procedure for those who choose plastic surgery. In this process of being respectful, we can sharpen our skills and promote technological advancement.
